Leidy ChurchmanSpace Remembers
Matthew Marks Gallery, West 22nd Street
Sep 11 – Oct 24, 2026 Chelsea
Thirteen new paintings by Leidy Churchman, from their island home in Maine to Tibetan Buddhist imagery, with three painted sculptures.
Five of the paintings are six by nine feet. One shows Churchman’s home on an island off Maine, with a cow sprouting a blueberry bush, two lobsters and a Buddhist protector deity floating overhead; another looks down a storm drain into the spiral chambers of a nautilus shell. In Center of the Universe (Ratna), Churchman’s own body comes apart among mountains, after the Tibetan Buddhist ritual of chöd. The sculptures are oil on wood or rock with found feathers.
