Wangari MathengeRe-membering

Lévy Gorvy Dayan

Sep 17 – Oct 24, 2026 Upper East Side

Five new paintings and Mathenge’s first public showing of sculpture, from a series on Kenyan colonial history and her own cultural identity.

In her first solo show with the gallery, Mathenge continues the Re-membering series she began in 2024, prompted by Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s book Something Torn and New and by her study of Kenyan colonial literature and objects from 1900 to 1963, the year of independence.

The canvases look down on lone, contemplative figures among piles of books, objects and textiles; a sculpture in yarn, macramé cord and a dress form joins them.
