David DriskellWake Up Everybody

Jenkins Johnson Gallery

Oct 2 – Dec 19, 2026 Tribeca

Paintings, collage, assemblage and prints by David Driskell made from 1960 to the early 2000s, ranging from landscapes to jazz portraits.

Spanning four decades, the show brings together paintings, works on paper, collage and printmaking—linocuts, woodcuts and serigraphs—by David Driskell, moving between abstraction and figuration, Christian devotional imagery and African craft, and landscapes and jazz musicians shaped by his years in the American South, his travels in Africa and his ties to Maine.

The title borrows a line from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes’ 1975 song Wake Up Everybody, honoring Driskell’s decades as a teacher and mentor to generations of African American artists alongside his own career as a painter and curator.
