New paintings of family, friends and East Los Angeles, some collaged with paint scrapings and debris from city walls.
Alvarez paints memories of the past several years, several of them in the manner of a daily journal. They follow his bicycle ride from Whittier to his Alhambra studio, lost skate spots, Sunday outings in Hollenbeck Park, and the family’s move out of his grandmother’s home of sixty years, which is collaged into Moving Away.
He combines oil painting, spray paint from his graffiti background and illustration training, adding paint scabs and peeled wall paint for a soft focus. He was in Made in LA at the Hammer Museum in 2023.
