Lorian GwynnSelf-Pulled Strings

New paintings of portraits, remembered group scenes and marionette-like figures, exploring how memory and circumstance shape a person.
Lorian Gwynn’s debut solo show in New York brings together paintings from the past year—portraits, memory-based group scenes and recurring marionette-like figures. Our Own Theatre reworks a wedding staged as performance art, while Orange City recalls an illegal rave broken up by police, both set in compressed space and heightened color rather than straight realism.
Gwynn builds each canvas in layers, moving from acrylic into successive coats of oil without a fixed plan, so contours dissolve and figures surface late in the process. The recurring marionettes stand for a person both acted upon and self-determining.
