Paintings and multimedia works from Inokuma’s twenty years in New York, with photographs, film and ephemera of his circle.

The first New York solo museum show of Inokuma (1902–1993) looks at the paintings he showed at the Willard Gallery and the multimedia works he made while living in the city from 1955 to 1975. It draws on MIMOCA in Marugame, Japan Society’s own collection and the newly discovered Hirose Family Collection.

He and his wife, Fumiko, hosted gatherings for American and visiting Japanese artists, among them Jasper Johns, Rothko, Rauschenberg and Yoko Ono. Photographs, film footage and ephemera document those exchanges.
