Rachael Catharine AndersonHidden Peril
New paintings of poisonous plants and mushrooms, made from direct observation on marble-dust grounds.
Anderson forages for, researches and studies poisonous plants and mushrooms, either in their habitats or in the studio. Over several painting sessions she records small shifts in each plant’s form rather than aiming for scientific accuracy.
She prepares her surfaces with marble dust, setting the stone’s permanence against the fleeting subjects. The paintings draw on the history of botanical imagery, from still life to memento mori, and on the plant as a source of beauty, poison and knowledge.
