Photographs, installations, photobooks and printed matter by twenty-eight Japanese women artists, from the 1950s to today.

The show reconsiders the history of Japanese photography through twenty-eight women of several generations. Its works look at everyday life, at the roles women in Japan have held and reshaped, and at ways of pushing the limits of the medium.

Organized by Aperture with the Rencontres d’Arles and curated by Pauline Vermare, Lesley A. Martin and Takeuchi Mariko, it accompanies Aperture’s 2024 book. Artists include Ishikawa Mao, Sawada Tomoko, Ninagawa Mika and Yanagi Miwa.
