Shuling GuoTemple II
New oil and colored-pencil paintings on linen of bodies, plants and temple imagery, plus the artist’s first mural.
Guo’s paintings, made after the birth of her daughter and the death of her grandmother, return to the temples and folk rituals of her childhood in Chaoshan, China. Bodily forms, botanical shapes and wing-like motifs glow within soft haloes, drawing on Daoist and Buddhist imagery and on Piero della Francesca.
She layers colored pencil and oil on sanded linen mounted on panel, leaving some raw linen showing. The show also debuts her first mural, which turns the gallery into a sacred space.
