Tula TelfairWho Owns This Land
New oil paintings of vast, invented landscapes, some lightly marked by roads and buildings, others untouched by people.
Tula Telfair’s first solo show with the gallery brings together more than a dozen large oil paintings of landscapes she composes from memory and imagination rather than observation, heightening colors and widening distances beyond anything she has actually seen.
Some canvases, rendered in a hushed cobalt blue, show rivers and valleys threaded with roads and settlements, as in Infrastructure and Superstructure; others, like The Temptations and This Is Just the Beginning, depict rock, water and mountain slopes with no human presence at all, weighing how humans use and claim the land against nature’s indifference to the question.
