Tula TelfairWho Owns This Land

Hirschl & Adler Modern

Oct 14 – Nov 20, 2026 Midtown

Opening soon

More than a dozen large invented oil-on-canvas landscapes weighing humans’ claims on the land against nature’s indifference.

Telfair paints imagined landscapes drawn from her travels from Iceland to Antarctica, heightening colors and widening distances rather than recording any one place. One group, in a hushed cobalt blue, shows roads and small buildings settling quietly into river valleys, as in Infrastructure and Superstructure (2026); another shows wild terrain, such as a surging waterfall in The Temptations (2026) or a windswept mountain slope in This Is Just the Beginning (2026), with no trace of people at all.

Set against each other, the two kinds of scene raise a question the paintings leave open: whether the land belongs to us or we to it. This is the gallery’s first solo exhibition of Telfair’s work.
