Meghann StephensonQueen of the Neighborhood!
Nine paintings casting Dante’s nine circles of Hell as quiet, domestic scenes of womanhood, vanity and confinement.
Stephenson’s third solo show reworks Dante’s Inferno through a feminine lens, pairing each of its nine circles with a painting of understated transgression rather than grand sin. A young woman discovering her own beauty stands in for Heresy; a figure resigned to being swallowed by a cloud and overgrown grass renders Anger; a still life of an apple, its rot visible only in reflection on a silver tray, nods to Eve and to how minor faults get judged harshly.
In another painting, a woman facing away from the viewer is boxed in by a white picket fence, making Limbo a picture of domestic confinement. Stephenson, a 2013 Parsons graduate based in Los Angeles, has shown in groups at Felix LA, Woaw Gallery, Harper’s and Frieze Seoul.
