Angela ChinaMoods of Nature
Abstract oil paintings built up and scraped back in layers, hovering between landscape and landslide.
China builds her canvases through accumulation and erosion, working over and scraping back layers of oil paint in a single medium so each surface becomes a record of revisions. The results suggest flora, fauna and terrain without naming them, as in Pink Sky.
She began as a figurative painter and, earlier, a graffiti artist known as “Gumshoe”. She reached abstraction by refusing to discard failed canvases, and cites Titian, Goya, Bacon, Joan Mitchell and Cecily Brown as constant interlocutors.
