New paintings built from black washes, pencil grids and winged forms, two of them outlining the absent Madonna of Antonello da Messina’s Virgin Annunciate.
Hur’s first solo show with the gallery brings new paintings in acrylic, colored pencil and pigment, several in two or four panels. Each starts as a ground of thin black brushwork, overlaid with a pencil grid and then an image: wing-like bars in the Angel series, a lapis-blue wash in the diptych Suspension.
Two paintings hung on axis outline the absent Madonna of Antonello da Messina’s Virgin Annunciate, and the one drawing radiates from a sketch of the room it hangs in. Daniel Marcus wrote an essay for the show.
