Sep 10 – Oct 24, 2026 Chelsea

Jaar’s 1987 Times Square animation objecting to the use of “America” for the United States, traced through four decades of later versions.

Jaar made A Logo for America for the Public Art Fund’s Messages to the Public series, an animation that ran on the Spectacolor sign in Times Square in April 1987. A newly digitized version plays at large scale in a darkened room, and the original storyboard drawings are shown for the first time.

Photographs, lightboxes and videos follow the work’s later restagings, including one on a barge off Miami Beach, and how its imagery has spread into wider media.
