Jutta KoetherSongs of New York

Galerie Buchholz

Sep 8 – Oct 31, 2026 Midtown

Koether’s paintings from 1995 into the 2000s, after her move from Cologne to New York, with William Blake as a recurring reference.

The show opens in 1995 with a large copy of a painting Koether and Tom Verlaine bought at the Chelsea Flea Market, of spotlights over a dark Madison Square Garden. Later canvases range from pitch-black grounds drawn over in metallic pen to bright all-over fields, grids, smiley faces and exploding suns.

The title is that of the column Koether began in 1996 for the Cologne music magazine SPEX, after Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience; words increasingly enter her paintings. Tonio Kröner and Christopher Müller curated the show.
