Six early works by Rauschenberg that belonged to his friend Cy Twombly, shown in the centenary year of his birth.

The two artists met at the Art Students League in 1951, went on to Black Mountain College and travelled together through Italy, Morocco and Spain in 1952–53. Twombly kept one of the earliest of Rauschenberg’s sculptures to survive, an assemblage of 1950, when much of what he made in those years was lost or reused.

With it were a life-size blueprint photogram made with Susan Weil in 1950, and examples from the Black Painting, Elemental Sculpture and Combine series. The show ran alongside the Marcel Duchamp exhibition that opened the gallery’s new ground-floor space at 980 Madison, and was extended to September 26.
