Fredericks & Freiser

Oct 7 – Nov 7, 2026 Chelsea

Three recent large-scale paintings in oil, oil stick and pencil, in which Mattax’s forms begin to multiply.

This is the first of the gallery’s Spotlight series, short presentations meant to feel like a studio visit, showing a new body of work before it is finished. Mattax’s three 2026 canvases are made by dragging, scraping and rebuilding the surface with oil, oil stick and pencil.

The paintings mark a change in his practice: as forms multiply, the work moves from accumulation toward a denser, more intricate structure within the abstraction itself.
