Jocelyn HobbieA Rosy Fingered Dawn

Fredericks & Freiser

Oct 8 – Nov 7, 2026 Chelsea

New oil paintings of women, including the artist’s first sustained series of nudes, with owls, butterflies and gold leaf.

Hobbie paints her figures with flawless, brushless finish, producing only about four canvases a year. Pattern, drawn from Ukiyo-e, New Objectivity and textiles, has long shielded her women; here the nude becomes a sustained subject for the first time, and crease, contour and fold take over the work that clothing once did.

Owls and butterflies recur, and several paintings add gold leaf, moving toward emblem, allegory and icon. Titles such as Memento Mori and Wingspan point to mortality, transformation and myth.
