Beatrice ArraesSeven Keys
New oil paintings of staged still lifes, volcanoes and obscure objects, exploring hidden psychological states.
The title nods to a Portuguese saying about guarding something precious behind seven locks and keys. A trained dancer, Arraes paints oil scenes of contorted fruit peels, scraps of paper, board-game pieces and earthen mounds, staged like characters in theatrical dramas of displacement and desire.
Several canvases depict volcanoes and calderas—rare in Brazil’s geology—as a metaphor for hidden, metamorphic psychological states. The São Paulo-based artist has recently shown solo at PEANA, Mexico City, and Sea View, Los Angeles.
