Sonya DermanWet Blanket
Hand-embroidered, painted and quilted cotton works with appliquéd words, cats and figures, drawn from everyday life and teaching.
Derman makes quilts from hand-embroidered, painted and hand-quilted cottons, with appliqué words such as DODO, CAT DAD, JOY and END OF THE BAR. Short slogans, riddles and jokes are emptied of their anthemic tone and then filled out again in fabric, alongside anonymous cats and humans and a few sequins.
The work draws on her job teaching middle school, on dating, and on family memory and leftovers, in the spirit of garage sales and hand-me-downs. The page carries an essay by Jamie Chan.
