Thirty-four oil paintings and text panels reimagining Tolstoy’s Natasha Rostova and Pushkin’s Polina as women free to pursue art.

O’Leary’s first narrative painting installation pairs thirty-four oil paintings with thirty-five text panels she wrote herself, reimagining Tolstoy’s Natasha Rostova and Pushkin’s Polina as women free to pursue art. Interiors, battlefields and ballrooms unfold in flattened, saturated scenes between figuration and abstraction, tied together by recurring plants, moons and carriages.

It is O’Leary’s second show with the gallery, following the work’s 2025 debut in Paris at the Fondation des États-Unis; a companion book and film share its title.
