New paintings on hand-dyed silk, works on paper and a suspended textile sculpture depicting mermaids and water deities of Puerto Rico.
Collins hand-dyes silk with pigments drawn from flowers and compost, then paints en plein air, letting rain and humidity dissolve and settle the color until mermaids, sirens and water nymphs emerge from the abstraction. The figures draw on Caribbean, African, Indigenous and European myth and on the karst springs, rivers, mangroves and reefs of Puerto Rico.
A suspended sculpture of dyed linen, cotton and wool threads evokes aquatic vegetation and fishing nets, shown alongside works on paper. It is Collins’ first solo exhibition with the gallery, following a solo booth at The Armory Show this fall.
