Anna OrtizShapeshifter
Sep 9 – Oct 31, 2026 Tribeca
New oil paintings of imagined volcanic and watery landscapes, drawing on Mesoamerican myth and the jaguar as a shapeshifting guide.
Ortiz paints invented borderland landscapes shaped by Mesoamerican cosmology, her Mexican-American heritage and stories of migration. Volcanoes, reflective water, native plants, ancient relics and mythological figures recur, rendered in a restricted palette with subtle shifts in value and temperature.
The jaguar, a nahual or shapeshifting guide in Mesoamerican tradition, supplies the point of view, so the viewer travels through the terrain rather than looking at it. The works extend her earlier show Nocturnos en Sayula.
