Brandon Elijah JohnsonI Want to Believe
New small-scale oil paintings drawing on pop culture, film, music and art history, with a nostalgic, timeless feel.
The title comes from the poster in Agent Mulder’s office in The X-Files, which Johnson takes as a motto for holding on to hope amid doubt. Fieldwork, a portrait of the show’s two leads investigating the paranormal outdoors, refers to it directly.
The oil paintings combine images from film, television, music, art history and the artist’s own snapshots, reworked intuitively. They avoid modern technology and turn to the natural, supernatural, religious and musical. It is Johnson’s first solo show with the gallery.
