Margot BergmanOn the other hand
Sep 8 – Oct 31, 2026 Midtown
Bergman’s first paintings on blank canvas, from 2012–2014, shown with the large portraits of imagined women that followed them.
In 2012 Bergman put aside the Chicago thrift-store paintings she had painted faces into since the mid-1990s and turned to blank canvas. The 2012–2014 works, never before shown in New York, mix flowers, animals and figures, as in Parade and Candy Man, and lead to Gloria, a face composed of smaller faces.
They hang with large, raw portraits of imagined women from 2015–2019, with photorealistic eyes and mouths, scribbled hair and bare primed canvas. It is her fifth solo show in New York.
