Marcus JahmalBooty

New paintings of pirate figures with warped limbs and peg legs, plus floor piles of Swarovski crystals, on the history and myth of piracy.
Jahmal paints pirates drawn from Hollywood and Robert Louis Stevenson rather than historical record: swashbucklers with hook hands, peg legs and wide-brimmed hats, rendered in broad color fields with stretched, oblong anatomy.
Bandanas, jeans and jackets mark them as actors playing a part, even as the scenes of plunder and violence point to piracy’s real ties to colonial trade and slavery. On the floor, piles of Swarovski crystals stand in for plundered treasure.
