Dozie KanuGrass Roots – Hinges
Sep 17 – Oct 31, 2026 Chinatown
A new film about a Black rodeo rider, shown in a built structure with sculptural furniture, fabricated door hinges and sound.
Kanu draws on his Houston upbringing and Nigerian heritage to look at how cultural knowledge is handed down. Newly fabricated door hinges, based on forms from Nigerian visual culture, stand for traditions that persist, change or stay held in place.
At the center is Cowboy, a new documentary-like film following a young rider at the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, the longest-running Black rodeo in the United States. It is shown within a purpose-built architectural structure with furniture and sound made for the show.
