Hiroko OhnoEvent Horizon
New paintings and small sculptures made with mineral pigments, seashells, coral and salt, evoking black holes, gravitational waves and cosmic time.
Ohno paints with traditional Japanese mineral pigments, some formed over billions of years, layering dark blue surfaces over hidden fields of red to suggest unseen histories within visible matter. The centerpiece, a 96-by-152-inch two-canvas painting, translates astronomical distances into proportional intervals and curved lines standing in for gravitational waves, drawing on the Event Horizon Telescope’s first image of a black hole.
Smaller canvases and works on paper extend the same inquiry, including a painting of the Milky Way made during a visit to Chile’s ALMA Observatory. A steel-and-Styrofoam sculpture adds a spatial counterpart to the paintings. It is Ohno’s first solo show at the gallery.
