Zio ZieglerThe Tesseract
Paintings and bronzes in four distinct modes, from dense patterned canvases to spare monochromes, circling the story of the expulsion from Eden.
Ziegler works here in four ways: crowded, patterned paintings he calls illuminated manuscripts; spare monochromes partly inspired by ancient black- and red-figure pottery; large biomorphic “Essential Figures”; and totemic figures cast in bronze. A suite of etchings condenses each mode.
The series grew from his reading of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Bible, and Adam and Eve from Masaccio’s Expulsion from the Garden of Eden recur throughout. It is his fourth solo show with the gallery.
