People Make Art: A Tribute to Melvin Edwards

A tribute to the sculptor Melvin Edwards, who died in 2026, through his welded steel and work by fifteen artists who knew him.

Paintings, sculptures and works on paper from 1954 to 2024 map one circle of Edwards’s friendships, with canvases by Frank Bowling, Sam Gilliam and Jack Whitten hung alongside his own welded-steel sculptures and spray-painted works on paper.

Edwards (1937–2026) built that circle over six decades, from Houston and Los Angeles to New York and Dakar. The title comes from his remark that art is made by people, not by other art.
