Paintings, drawings and mixed-media works by eleven artists weighing pattern, color, the body and landscape in abstraction.

Eleven artists test how abstract compositions find balance. Julie Mehretu translates research into movement and architecture into ambiguous spatial diagrams, while Marina Adams builds interlocking geometric forms around ideas of connection; Anna Kunz paints standing over her canvases, measuring their arcing color fields against her own body.

Sheree Hovsepian assembles cropped photographs of her sister with ceramics, string and wood into precarious bodily forms, and Eddie Martinez’s cartoon-like faces and skulls dissolve back into their surrounding compositions. Camilla Engström, Yoab Vera, Richard Diebenkorn and Joan Mitchell turn to landscape and horizon, Mitchell’s layered, atmospheric painting dating from her years in Vétheuil, France.
