Wonder Lanes: The Signs and Style of Midcentury Bowling
Neon signs from midcentury Southern California bowling centers, shown with video interviews, bowling shirts, menus, matchbooks and postcards.
The show looks at the family-oriented bowling palaces that appeared in Southern California in the mid-1950s and spread nationwide, with their beauty parlors, banquet halls, childcare, coffee shops and cocktail lounges, a contrast to the rougher prewar alleys.
Signs come from the museum’s collection and from collectors across the Southwest, joined by video interviews and period ephemera. The story centers on five lost Southern California lanes built after the war.
