Charles ArnoldiString Theory
Oct 3 – Dec 19, 2026 Hollywood
Charles Arnoldi’s String Theory paintings of 2016–2019, in which looping freehand lines pile up across the canvas and the shapes between them are filled with color.
Arnoldi, now 80 and exhibiting for more than half a century, made the series by drawing long, fluid lines with a sweep of the arm, close to surrealist automatic drawing, and letting the edges of the canvas hold them in. Where the lines cross, he filled the enclosed shapes with color.
The starting point was Yuval Noah Harari’s book Sapiens and its idea that humans can imagine things that do not exist. Arnoldi was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1946 and lives in Malibu.
