Tacita Dean’s FILM, the 11-minute silent 35mm work made for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2011, in its first showing in the United States.
Dean made the piece when analog film seemed close to vanishing, and it is both a tribute to the medium and its subject, projected on a towering vertical screen. She revived silent-era techniques such as glass matte painting, gate masking and in-camera superimposition, and turned an anamorphic lens on its side to double the frame’s height. Waterfalls, a street clock, a pine tree and an ostrich egg appear between sprocket holes that are part of the image. Hanneke Skerath and Mark Toscano organized it.
