Danica PhelpsReach
Large graphite drawings and gouache Flow drawings that turn mortgage debt and personal finances into countable lines.
Phelps has tracked her income, spending and debt through drawing since 1995. Here she looks at the strain of supporting herself and her son as a working artist. Each line is drawn from her core with her arm stretched as high as it will go, so the marks record physical effort as well as money.
In Walnut Mortgage, which took a year, every line stands for one dollar of a $530,000 mortgage. The Flow drawings use red, green and gray gouache and watercolor with graphite to show gains, expenses and debt.
