Carl ChengNature Never Loses

Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles

Sep 26, 2026 – Feb 28, 2027 Arts District

The first in-depth survey of Carl Cheng’s six-decade career making art about technology and the environment, with about 50 rarely shown works.

About 50 rarely exhibited works and archival material follow Cheng from the 1960s, when he began working amid political unrest and the aerospace boom, through process-based pieces such as Erosion Machine No. 4 and Early Warning System that join the natural and the man-made. ICA LA has also commissioned a new work using water.

Cheng was born in San Francisco in 1942 and lives in Santa Monica. The survey was organized by The Contemporary Austin and curated by Alex Klein; ICA LA is its last stop.
