The Making of a Medieval Manuscript

Getty Center

Aug 4, 2026 – Mar 14, 2027 Brentwood

Manuscripts from Getty’s collection arranged by the four stages of making a medieval book by hand: parchment, writing, painting and binding.

Examples run from a ninth-century North African Qur’an and the Irmengard Codex (shortly after 1053) to the Rothschild Pentateuch (1296), the Prayer Book of Charles the Bold (1469) and a Bible painted by Malnazar and Aghap’ir in 1637–38, alongside an original calf binding and a goatskin stretched on a frame to become parchment.
