Ann Leda ShapiroThrough the Tunnel

François Ghebaly

Sep 19 – Oct 31, 2026 Arts District

Recent works on paper and paintings of bodies, birth and cellular forms, shown with earlier pieces from six decades.

Shapiro structures many new works around the tunnel shape, drawn from her own near-death experience, to picture birth, death and the body as a system mirrored in nature. Cellular shows a figure dissolving into a cell; Birthing Upside Down (Thru) shows mother and child emerging from one body.

The show is anchored by Healing Scrolls, a four-part painting informed by her work as an acupuncturist and her study of Chinese medicine. Earlier works, including the 1970s watercolor Tightrope, trace her long commitments to spiritual practice, science and feminist activism.
