Frank WalterThe World Through
Paintings by the Antiguan artist Frank Walter, including a group of small round Spool series works, in his first West Coast presentation.
The show gathers paintings from across Walter’s recurring subjects: brightly colored landscapes, vignettes and portraits. A focused installation of small tondo paintings from his late Spool series, shaped partly by memories of a transatlantic ship voyage, looks like portholes and works as portals.
Drawing on Arjun Appadurai’s idea of the “scapes” of globalization, it considers Walter’s dreamscape, landscape and ethnoscape. It is his fifth solo show with the gallery and part of his centenary, alongside a museum show in Salvador, Brazil.
