New paintings of Big Sur’s redwood landscape, made by layering watercolor with machine-embroidered thread on canvas.

Morley’s paintings begin as watercolors on unstretched canvas, drawn from plein air observation, photographs and memory, then are built up section by section with machine embroidery. They look inland from his Big Sur home and studio, at ancient redwoods, a night sky and the yard outside, with traces of power lines and fences.

The works address the region’s layered history and its vulnerability to fire; wildfires threatened the area in the months before the show. It is his fourth solo exhibition at the gallery.
