Late oil paintings on board and paper from 1980–1991, near-abstract and swirling with color, by a self-taught East St. Louis artist.

Walker, who died in 1993 and showed rarely in life, painted in his East St. Louis basement studio. The works here come from his last decade, when he moved from narrative figuration toward near abstraction, spreading thick oil with a palette knife, sometimes mixed with plastic beads, into arcing bands and angular shards of color.

Fragments of bodies and landscapes surface in these cosmic, religiously charged scenes. It is the gallery’s first solo show of his paintings, presented with Andrew Edlin Gallery, New York.
