Ruin and Rush

Neue Nationalgalerie

Apr 25, 2026 – Jan 3, 2027 Tiergarten

Around 35 works from the collection on Berlin in the 1910s and 1920s, from Kirchner’s Potsdamer Platz to Lotte Laserstein.

Paintings and sculptures by Otto Dix, George Grosz, Hannah Höch, Jeanne Mammen, Käthe Kollwitz and others are arranged in three sections: the fast-growing city and its traffic and nightlife, the poverty most Berliners lived in, and the “new woman” and queer life. Dix’s 1925 portrait of the dancer Anita Berber is on loan from Stuttgart.

Clips from Metropolis and Berlin: Symphony of a Great City and recorded poems by Mascha Kaléko and Erich Kästner fill out the picture. Curated by Uta Caspary and Irina Hiebert Grun.
