Ulay and Marina Abramović

Neue Nationalgalerie

Nov 28, 2026 – May 2, 2027 Tiergarten

Opening soon

Thu, Dec 3Walk and Talk – Ulay, Ulay & Abramović, public tour, 4 pm

Ulay’s early photographs and film documentation alongside videos, objects and a live performance from his twelve-year collaboration with Marina Abramović.

The show marks fifty years since Ulay took Carl Spitzweg’s The Poor Poet from the museum in 1976 and hung it in a Turkish guest worker family’s home in Kreuzberg. The film documentation of that action is central, shown with a loaned version of the painting. Early series such as S’he and FOTOTOT, whose unfixed photographs fade in light, show him pushing photography toward performance.

Videos, photographs, sculptures, drawings, sketches and letters trace the partnership of Ulay and Abramović from 1976 to 1988, ending with The Lovers on the Great Wall of China. Imponderabilia is performed live daily from 3 to 4:30 pm.
