Rooms / Stages

Jana Sophia Nolle, Georges Rousse, Helmut Newton and others

Museum für Fotografie

Jun 5 – Nov 15, 2026 Charlottenburg

Photographs in which the room, not the person, is the subject, from empty interiors to staged portraits, with Helmut Newton’s hotel and theatre pictures.

The show turns from performance to the space around it, following the 2019 Body Performance exhibition at the Helmut Newton Foundation. Each artist appears with one body of work: staged portraits that fold in their settings, long exposures in which dancers vanish, deserted interiors, and spatial interventions built for a single picture. Wall-sized murals mark parts of the galleries.

A second part presents Newton’s fashion and theatre work as stages: hotel rooms and lobbies in Paris, Milan and New York, outdoor sets in Monte Carlo, and his Pina Bausch pictures from Wuppertal, shown as murals with Polaroids in the cases.
