Carrie Mae WeemsThe Heart of the Matter

C/O Berlin

Sep 12, 2026 – Feb 3, 2027 Charlottenburg

A retrospective of more than four decades of Weems’s photographs, videos and installations on race, gender, power and memory, with over 100 works.

Early series such as Family Pictures and Stories (1978–84) and the Kitchen Table Series (1990), in which Weems stages scenes of love and family life at her own kitchen table, lead on to pictures of museums, monuments, film studios and plantations.

Newer work includes Preach (2024), on Black communities of faith, and Leave Now! (2022), a Pepper’s ghost video installation about her grandfather, an Arkansas tenant farmer. Curated by Sarah Hermanson Meister of Aperture, adapted by Boaz Levin.
