Sideways Glance
Alexa Burrell, Sienna Freeman, Barbara Hammer and Daviel Shy
Oct 3, 2026 – Feb 20, 2027 Dogpatch
Sculpture, collage, photography and experimental video by four artists exploring lesbian ways of looking and being looked at.
Curated by Elena Gross, the show takes its name from filmmaker Daviel Shy’s essay on lesbian feminist theorist Marilyn Frye, which argues that a sideways glance can break looking and listening free of rigid, dichotomous roles.
Alexa Burrell, Sienna Freeman, Barbara Hammer and Shy work across sculpture, collage, photography and video, each toying with the positions of beholder and beheld to build a fluid exchange running in several directions at once. Gross has also written a longer curatorial statement published alongside the show.
