Excavating Uranus, A Psalm for Nyota Uhura

Sydney Cain, Ayana V. Jackson, Courtney Desiree Morris and bryant terry

SFAC Main Gallery (San Francisco Arts Commission)

Oct 8, 2026 – Jan 30, 2027 Civic Center

Four artists’ objects, images, sounds, seeds and recipes treat Black memory as something carried across past, present and future.

Curated by Ashara Ekundayo, the show brings Sydney Cain, Ayana V. Jackson, Courtney Desiree Morris and bryant terry together around a non-linear sense of time drawn from Dr. Rasheedah Phillips’ writing on Black temporalities and from Dogon and other African cosmologies.

Its title nods to Nyota Uhura, the Star Trek communications officer played by Nichelle Nichols, as a figure who carries knowledge between worlds; music by Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra and Stevie Wonder and Ben Okri’s novel The Famished Road shape its mood.
