Phil HaleWalk Through Walls or Don’t
New oil paintings and graphite collages on antique prints by the Boston-born, London-based figurative painter.
The title is an instruction that undoes itself, and the gallery reads the show as a record of the struggle to make the work: square oils of figures and fragments charged with consequence but never explained, alongside graphite drawn over antique prints and photographs.
Hale began as an illustrator, for Stephen King among others, and painted Tony Blair’s official portrait for the House of Commons. His work is in the collections of the Palace of Westminster and the National Portrait Gallery.
