Lasting Joy: Asawa Family Selections

Life-cast masks of twenty Asawa family members, each paired with the Asawa artwork they chose and a note on why.

Twenty members of Ruth Asawa’s family sat for life-cast masks, each shown beside an Asawa work they picked as their own favorite and a short account, in their words, of why.

The choices range from a surfboard, jewelry and a large Celastic head to sketchbooks, paintings and wire sculptures rarely seen in public, tracing how art-making ran through family life under Asawa, who had her children and grandchildren work alongside her from an early age.
